Skype call- 16th November

Many interesting points were raised during this call, some of the ones that stood out to me are:

• teaching and mentoring styles and how they can impact you as person, along with effecting if you are an introvert or an extrovert. One thing that stood out was being stripped back and built back up. This can be important for technique, but has made me question whether or not this can affect your creativity; because after all you are being taught your way of doing it is wrong and are being shown how to move in the 'right' way for a genre.

• criticism- why it is more prevalent in the performing industry, how it can affect yourself and your practice. Self criticism, in my opinion is vital to developing as an artist. However, it is only beneficial if kept in check and not allowed to consume you.

• the importance of separation from your job and finding other hobbies, or the opposite- the impact (which can be positive) of fully immersing yourself in your practice and career. For me, fully immersing myself in my practice is the best thing for my sense of belonging, good mental health, and overall life enjoyment.

  1. Hi Katie, there were many interesting topics yesterdays, you've picked up on some great ones! I agree that fully immersing ourselves demonstrates that we truly care about our practice. As we have learnt, our practice isn't just our job, instead it defines us as individuals! But I feel there is a difference between balancing work and life and practice and life... if that makes sense. Thank you for sharing x

  2. Hi Katie,
I agree with the idea that being 'broken down to be built back up' can sometimes be detrimental to creativity and confidence. I personally struggled with questioning every idea that came naturally to me and constantly analysing whether it would be 'approved of' by my peers and teachers. I think you have to leave the essence of your individuality and creativity, whilst accepting criticism in order to improve your physical movement and understanding of it. In my opinion balancing these is the most challenging thing.
