social media and freedom of expression

In todays module one discussion group, many interesting topics were brought up which shows that learning through conversation and debate is so important in development as a person. Some of the topics that were touched on were the impacts and uses of web 2.0, how social media can have its positives (like networking, inspiration, and connectivity) but also negatives (exposure when 'too young' and its implications and possibly doing the opposite it was designed for). Along with diversity within shows and when is it (in your opinion) acceptable to be historically accurate in a show and when is it not?  This brings me to question whether I feel more connected when on social media than I do in the 'real world'. I use social media, like many others, as a way promote myself and network with both modeling and dance contacts. I do find web 2.0 helpful in this respect to sign up to classes, auditions and form working relationships with many performers and photographers alike. Man...

Current hurdles and my practice

I began the week reading through the module 1 handbook. As you all know the concepts can be quite confusing/ hard to get your head around especially because I am so out of practice academically (due to 3 years of professional dance training, which didn't involve too much writing). Especially in the light of the current economical situation most artists find ourselves in- having to undertake 'normal' jobs to afford travel to auditions and classes, and in ...

1st blog post

Hi, I am Katie Malone. I thought I would use my 1st blog post to say a bit about myself and respond to the welcome back meeting today. I am a dancer from North Wales and I am trained in multiple styles (ballet, jazz, tap, contemporary, and commercial/ jazz funk). I have just graduated this year from the Northern Ballet school in Manchester, so as you can guess we didn't get a normal third year or a graduation.  I am excited to start this course as I am eager to learn more about my practice and learn some new skills. Initially, I was slightly overwhelmed by the course as it seems to not have a specific end point. However, I now understand that you won't know the end product until you get there. This makes me excited to see where I end up and what skills I will learn and develop over this course along with the new information I will find and the questions I will ask. It definitely helped talking to the module 2s and 3s, as it has made me much more at ease with w...
